When I was hired as managing editor of the Walker Art Center homepage in 2011, having left the museum for four years to work in journalism, The Atlantic's Alexis Madrigal wrote, "If anyone can figure out how to turn the Walker's website into an art mag frontend for the museum's collection, Schmelzer can." And that I did, innovating online publishing at the Walker, from its groundbreaking content-forward 2011 homepage to its reinvention in 2017 as Walker Reader. In August 2020, I was restructured out of my job, and now I'm looking to share my passion for and expertise about museum publishing elsewhere.
